Toll Collection

Since the 1970s, TRMI has been producing toll collection systems, equipment, and solutions, including E-ZPass systems for public and private organizations. In 1981, TRMI designed and installed the first all solid-state electronic toll collection system in the United States at the Golden Gate Bridge and has since installed toll collection systems from Norway to Australia. This work has given TRMI a wide base of experience with and knowledge of all facets of toll collection solutions.

TRMI was founded in 1974 to manufacture axle-counting treadles for toll collection authorities. Since then, we have installed a wide array of sophisticated, and often highly specialized, toll collection systems throughout the US and in several other countries. Our wide base of experience with custom-integrated toll solutions means that we can build an efficient and cost-effective toll system for you.

Key features of our toll collection systems are achieved by promoting a balance of custom components and off-the-shelf-products. Our philosophy holds that the key to an optimum (price/performance) toll collection solution is in selecting and matching proven products and customized software tailored to the customer’s unique requirements.

System Software

TRMI builds two- and three-tier integrated systems using ever-advancing, state-of-the-art software, hardware and network technologies. Our Guardian™ software suite enables highly tailored yet stable toll collection and revenue management. The Guardian software suite includes modules for lane operation, VES/ALPR, supervisor transaction monitoring, supervisor cash in, system administration, audit, reconciliation, reporting, and external data exchange. Ad hoc reporting is done with Crystal Reports.

Our designs employ technology implemented with the Microsoft .NET framework, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, and Cisco network security to implement the most current web-browser-based applications. These applications run over existing private networks or over the Internet using high-security virtual private networks, through standard, low-cost Internet service providers.

Guardian Software Suite Modules include:

  • Lane and Toll Terminal
  • Data Concentrator
  • Real-Time Monitor (RTM)
  • Oracle Database 11g Release 2
  • Cash Deposit Workstation
  • Video Auditing
  • Audit and Reconciliation
  • Reports
  • System Administration
  • MOMS
  • CSC and Bank Interface
  • Customer Tag Account Management
  • Customer Service Website

Your data is important. We are an Oracle Certified Partner, and we use Oracle Database 11g Release 2 to store revenue and traffic data. We also use MySQL to store VES data.

We can implement our system using any high-performance relational database system you designate. And we use widely accepted entity-relationship design methods to create database schema with tables that correspond to real-world entities such as employees, accounts, tours of duty, moneybags, bank deposits etc. We do this with natural relationships (e.g., an employee works a tour of duty and creates a money bag which is part of a bank deposit). This enables you to easily understand and use the data yourself. We also provide tools like Crystal Reports™ so you can create your own ad-hoc reports.

We select local and wide-area network technologies to create a custom combination of economy and optimum performance.

We use Cisco® network equipment to implement high-security for our data communications.

All of our user applications for monitoring, managing, auditing and reporting are web-based applications, so you can run your data through your existing private networks or over the Internet using high-security virtual private networks from low-cost Internet service providers.

Electronic Toll Collection (ETC)

ETC using Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) is a true strength at TRMI. With over ten years of AVI experience, we bring unique, specialized and seasoned knowledge to your ETC project.

We have implemented ETC with Amtech, Mark IV, Sirit, HID proximity cards, and high speed laser bar code technologies. And our advanced tag/account lookup technology can locate an account status from a database containing 120 million tags in under one tenth of a second.

Open Road Tolling (ORT)

ORT 2.0™ - For Greater Accuracy

Building on the best practices from first-generation designs, TRMI has engineered a second generation of Open Road Tolling (ORT) with accuracy and reliability that can make your move to All Electronic Tolling (AET) more practical and more viable.

Even if full AET is not in your immediate future, TRMI delivers an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system with a level of sophistication and performance that is a generation beyond the others. That’s why we call it ORT 2.0™.
